BY JOSEPHINE OLATOMI SOBOYEJO – FORMER MEMBER, FEDERAL HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES (2ND REPUBLIC)
October 5th, 2009
Family values have been debased.
The string of family unity is over stretched or cut. There is no longer love in
the home. Holiness has no input in family matters. Husbands are no longer real
men and can not be trusted as fathers. Wives are no longer trusted and have
faded instead of being inestimable jewels. Children are rude, disobedient and do
not honor their
parents. Real homes have become rare especially when many homes parade tenants
camouflaging as families. The issue is on Love. Love has flown out of the
window, discarded into the bin or garbage bag. The result is that human Beings
have become loners, haters, aggrieved, unscrupulous, dangerous, and wicked. The
shortage or loss of Love in homes and environments has turned men to beasts.
Lack of love in homes has permeated outside of homes to associations and
relationships. No one can be trusted anymore and what we parade today in any
relationship is fluid and not solid enough to depend on. Taking a peep into a
man’s heart is very interesting and can be extremely dangerous. In fact you are
in jeopardy of encountering ferocious demonic thoughts, and murderous spiral
headed atomic contemplations.
Man’s physical looks at times; the smiling face is not the true reflection of
his thoughts. You never can decipher the thoughts harbored in a man’s heart. No
wonder Jesus warned us and advised us to look deep into the hearts of men and be
careful of motives and not just the actions. I am sure by now my readers are
wondering on my wandering thoughts. Man is the most deadly of God’s creations.
God created plants, animals, sea creatures etc. and till today they remain where
God put them but not man; he could not remain in the beautiful Garden of Eden.
The inherent danger is that man harms more those close to him; he maims,
destroys and kills his friends and benefactors. You do so much for a man and he
turns round to become your foe and a sell-out to your enemies. Eve sold Adam to
Satan by giving him the forbidden fruit. Are you a man’s victim? Please wait for
me, I never finish; I am just warming up. Follow my random thoughts as I think
aloud and you might learn a lesson.
St. Augustine once said, "All truth is God's truth." This is the absolute truth!
The principles that drive the internal combustion engine, that cause radio and
television to function, that bring into existence computers, International
Networking and cellular phones are not man's inventions, but are simply man’s
discovery of already existing truths and scientific principles of God. But what
happens when secular concepts and methods call into question or seek to redefine
the truths revealed in Scripture? It is at this point that we must adjust
Augustine's dictum to state, "All error is the devil's error." And honestly the
devil is at work sending scripts into homes and men’s hearts.
Jesus tried so much for his disciples yet was betrayed by one of them; a close
and trusted aide (the man in charge of money) called Judas. Papa Obafemi Awolowo
was highly rated and commended yet his Yoruba kin and kith became his albatross
by ganging up against him to lose the Presidential Election to 12 2/3.
When I consider the State of Affairs in Ogun State at present, I realize that
those that have benefitted much more from the dividends of democracy are the
ones given the State so much trouble. These are the people that His Excellency,
Otunba Gbenga Daniel favored above others and granted opportunities. Why do
human beings change? A search for the reason has yielded no answer for me. A
cursory look at the past show us that those who shouted Hosanna! Hosanna!
Hosanna! When Jesus rode to Jerusalem on a donkey were the same people that
shouted Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him! In front of Pilate the Judge.
I just wonder what OGD could have done that makes these people so determined to
go to hell rather than reconcile with him. I wonder because I know the man OGD
and can vouch for his large heart and fairness. Why is hatred pushing these
people to the pit of hell rather than heed the word of God that love is the
greatest of all virtues? Why are these people so determined to turn Ogun State
into a Jihad? Have they forgotten that we are all mortals and shall face the
judgment seat of God one day?
George Washington Carver once said “How far you go in life depends on your being
tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the
striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life you will
have been all of these.” Also Albert Einstein once wrote that “A human being is
a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He
experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the
rest, a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to
affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves
from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living
creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” Another word for Love is
Compassion. Compassion flows from the heart and nourishes both the giver and the
Someone has sagely noted that "God rarely uses a man greatly until He hurts him
deeply" — including His own Son. Maybe that is the reason God is permitting
these people to hurt His Excellency so that he can become greater. This brings
to memory Saint Peter’s inspiration word in 1 Peter 1:6&7 "Now for a little
while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come
so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though
refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor
when Jesus Christ is revealed." Nothing lasts forever except God, His Word, and
the Souls of Men and Women.
The tendencies to be vindictive, malicious and intolerance are the hallmark of
these people against OGD for his independent mindedness and loyalty to his
Constituency (the masses of Ogun State) rather than lean towards the godfathers.
The godfathers known vices are dictatorial tendencies and unforgiving spirits.
May the Good LORD save us from their traps? It is clearly evident that the bond
of blood oath is at the root of the recalcitrant attitudinal unchangeable stance
and the determination to continue to wage war or battle to the end. The battle
is not for OGD but for God and no matter how persistent, consistent, forceful,
and powerful an enemy or enemies; they shall be defeated for one with God is a
clear winner. God chose him and God shall sustain him. As Nigeria celebrates
49th Independence Anniversary; Government in their various States enjoin the
Federal Government to mark this anniversary. The Government of Ogun State,
Nigeria started the event with Special prayer service at the Mosque on Friday,
September 25, 2009 and Special Church Service on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at
the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta with a Theme: Unity towards a secured
future. This ‘Unity’ could have been more portrayed with the participation of
all arms of Governance in the State; but three were fully represented while the
Leadership of Legislative Arm was absent at 49th National Day Celebration.
The questions that came to my mind are: Are members of this Legislative arm
Nigerians or are they aliens? Are they truly from Ogun State or are imported
from neighboring States? The continued unworthy behavior of the present
leadership of Ogun State Assembly should be condemned by all. PDP has 100% hold
on all elective and non-elective offices in Ogun State; so what can then bring
unresolved conflict? Those who fail to listen to the word of wisdom make their
hearts like flint, refusing to hear, refusing to see and refusing to unite with
the State Governor to move the State forward in development and unity.
Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers; you boast, “We have entered
into a covenant with death, with the grave we have made an agreement. When an
overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our
refuge and falsehood our hiding place.” So this is what the Sovereign LORD says
“See, I lay a Stone in Zion, a tested Stone, a precious cornerstone for a Sure
foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed, I will make justice the
measuring line and righteousness the plumb-line; hail will sweep away your
refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding-place. Your covenant with
death will be annulled; your agreement with the grave will not stand. When the
overwhelming Scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it, as often as it
comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it
will sweep through?
What can I then say or render that will not amount to repeating myself? Human
Beings are just difficult and selfish. God gave us His commandment on LOVE; and
in obedience should love one another. It is in love only that one can be
Magnanimous. This word ‘Magnanimous’ is described in the Readers’ Digest
Encyclopedic Dictionary by Funk and Wagnalls, 1969 as: "Manifesting generosity
in forgiving insults or injuries. Not given to resentment, or envy. Greatness of
soul. High-minded. Rather than be generous in forgiving insults or injuries, we
send triple insults or injuries to others; we resent and envy others. My clarion
call is to be gracious in all ramifications. Gracious is from the Greek word
charis, and it conveys the idea of being kind; that is seeking to bless others.
Let our actions bless others; let our deeds kind to others and it is only in
blessing others that we also shall be blessed by God.
We must exhibit heavenly love. The heaven bound love is God’s type of love;
unconditional, spontaneous, selfless, loyal and benevolent
concern for the well being of another. This is also sacrificial love. This is
the type Jesus Christ has for sinners. Let us forgive each other and embrace
each other. The two true foundations for Diversity are Development and Unity.
There could be no development without unity and where love binds people together
in unity, development strives. Ogun State is our own. Let us arise and join
hands with His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel to develop the State for
posterity. Omo Ogun, Ise Ya!
Let us remember all things emanate from the home. Home is the smallest unit of a
community. Community makes a city, a city builds up to a state and states
grouped together make a nation. It is then imperative to make a home strong to
have a strong society and nation. If members in a home do not tend to
criminality, there will be no crime in a nation. Teach your child when he is
young to bring you succour at your old age. God bless the homes! God bless Ogun
State! God bless Nigeria.
This is just MY VIEW!!!
