The Nigerian flag consists of three equal sized vertical bands - the right and
left bands are green; while the middle band is white.
The green color represents agriculture, while the
white color symbolizes peace and unity.
The flag was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi
( who was then a student) in 1959 and it was
adopted and first hoisted on October 1, 1960 as
the national flag. Nigeria gained independence
from the British government on the same day the
flag was first hoisted. It therefore represents
our independence from slavery and colonial
national flag law prohibits anyone from improper
flying or exhibition of the flag in any condition that
compromises it's quality and purpose. It must not be
defaced, altered or torn.
